RESEARCH OVERVIEW
Past, future and ongoing projects
We are excited to welcome our SPECTRAL residents: Luis Macias and Erwan Tracol & Laurent Reyes.

Luis Macias @luis__macias_ Luis will be in our lab to check out our Motion Picture Panorama Device and he will make a new film piece for the 360° installation, a legacy of film technicus Nico Komen. This new work will premiere at the coming edition of Back to the Future festival (19-21 September 2025). He also run the workshop for members ‘Deconstructing the Spectrum’ on the 12th of July, a journey to deconstruct the rainbow and expand the RGB spectrum within the camera, playing with colour filters, exploring multiple exposures and radical image compositions.

Luis Macias is an artist, filmmaker and moving image composer. His work addresses the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, exploring the cinematographic technology itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. Focused on experimental and procedural practices of analog image, his works in Super 8,16mm, 35mm and / or video format are composed for projection, performance or installation. He's co-founder and active member of the artist-run @craterlab in Barcelona.

Erwan & Laurent will work in our lab from 12th to 23rd of July on a new expanded cinema project that will premiere at our Back to the Future festival (19-21 September 2025). Their tools are projectors, sound and image loops, and their thumbs. Like gold diggers, Erwan and Laurent strive on stage to discover a nugget that will sparkle on the screen.
They will also guide the workshop ‘Hijacking photochemistry film & its projector devices’ at Filmwerkplaats on the 19th and 20th of July.

Erwan Tracol is a filmmaker based in Nantes, France. He is a member of the artist-run film lab @mire_nantes, where he learned to love and experiment with silver-based emulsion. His practice is focused on cameraless cinema techniques, the plasticity of celluloid and his relation to memories.

Based in Marseille, Laurent Reyes is a film maker and a photographer member of the artist-run film lab @labo_largent. He directs documentaries and experimental films when he is not conducting workshops or swimming in the mediterranean sea.

"It’s not the sun who is moving"
Luis Macias, ES, 2025, 16mm, colour, 58 meters

‘It’s not the sun who is moving’ proposes an abstract contemplation, where the immobile reveals its own invisible choreography. A dissonance arises between the illusion of what we perceive as constant and what is really changing. Motionless... we gaze upon the suns. What is yet to come?
A film created with the Hyperlapse 360° Camera, a device developed at Crater-Lab during SPECTRAL, unfolds as an immersive installation within the 360° Motion Picture Panorama of Filmwerkplaats.

"Opblinken"
Erwan Tracol & Laurent Reyes, FR, 2025, 20’, 16mm live performance

Flames shoot up into the sky from the ends of large pipes.
Thick smoke billows. A storm is brewing.
A swaying figure tries to make its way through.
The hectic pace carries us along.

Erwan Tracol is a member of Mire (Nantes, FR) whose photographic and filmic work explores the many possibilities of film. Laurent Reyes (Marseille, FR) photography and films are born from his need to embrace life in all its ambivalence. Against the comfort of certainties, these practices push him to rub shoulders with the rough edges of existence to keep the quest for ecstasy alive.
